Upgrading BaseOS Using the CLI#

Upgrading the BaseOS 9 software stack using the command-line interface (CLI) is the process of updating GPU drivers, networking drivers, and system tools directly through terminal commands.

The BaseOS CLI tool prepares the system to upgrade to the next BaseOS release. You can then use operating system package management tools to complete the upgrade.

Note

The BaseOS CLI tool is not used to perform an operating system upgrade. It specifically targets the BaseOS software stack.
Before upgrading your system, refer to the BaseOS 9 Release Notes for the upgrade path and supported DGX systems.

Upgrade Steps#

Check that your system is ready to upgrade to the next BaseOS release:

baseos upgrade --dry-run
```
If the upgrade dry run completes without errors, proceed with the upgrade. If it fails because the next BaseOS release is not yet available, wait for the release and run the dry run again. Run the upgrade with the following command:
```
baseos upgrade
```
After the system is reconfigured for the next BaseOS release, complete the upgrade by running the system package management tool upgrade:
DGX OS / Ubuntu
apt update apt full-upgrade
Red Hat
dnf upgrade
A reboot might be necessary to load any new kernel drivers included in the upgrade:
```
reboot
```

DESCRIPTION#

The baseos command manages the installed NVIDIA BaseOS version. By default, it prepares the system to upgrade to the next BaseOS release.

SUBCOMMANDS#

upgrade: Configure BaseOS for upgrade to a new version.

OPTIONS#

–dry-run: Run the command, but make no changes.
–from <version>: Override the detected installed BaseOS version.
–help: Display the command usage information.
–to <version>: Override the target BaseOS version to be configured.

Default is the currently installed version + 1.
-v, –verbose: Enable DEBUG level logging.
–version: Display the baseos command version.
–yes: Skip interactive confirmation prompts.

EXIT STATUS#

0: Success
1: Generic failure during apply (a partial state can exist).
2: Prechecks failed (no changes made).
3: User declined the confirmation prompt.

FILES#

/usr/share/baseos/stacks.yaml

The known BaseOS stacks and their detection strings.
/usr/share/baseos/upgrades/*.yaml

Transition YAML files that describe the transitions required to move from one version to another.
/usr/share/baseos/data/*N*/

Any required payload files for a target BaseOS version.

EXAMPLES#

To check whether the system is ready for a BaseOS upgrade without making any changes, perform a dry run:

baseos upgrade --dry-run

To prepare the system for upgrade to the next BaseOS release:

baseos upgrade
