# max_val_steps

#### `max_val_steps: <integer>` (Optional)

## Description

The maximum number of validation steps to perform. If set, `max_val_steps` will override the number of steps set by [`run_mode`](/run-mode). Setting `max_val_steps` is useful for customizing the time spent on validation the model.

* By default `max_val_steps` is set according to [`run_mode`](/run-mode).

* `max_val_steps`must be `> 0`.
