OpenShell Integration
OpenShell is the runtime APF governs today. APF plugs into two of OpenShell’s extension points, both served by the apf-policy-gateway process. OpenShell calls APF. APF never reaches into a sandbox.
Division of Responsibility
Compatibility
APF main is built against OpenShell v0.1.3. Both adapters take part in OpenShell’s extension protocol negotiation. APF advertises protocol 1.0 and requires one capability per extension, so a gateway that cannot negotiate refuses to start rather than run with a mismatched APF. Refer to Support and Compatibility.
Configuration Summary
On the APF side:
On the OpenShell side:
- An
[[openshell.gateway.interceptors]]registration for APF, withfailure_policy = "fail_closed". - An
[[openshell.supervisor.middleware]]registration namedapf-content-policy. - A
network_middlewaresentry in the signed sandbox policy that selectsapf-content-policyfor the hosts APF should evaluate. agent_policy_proposals_enabledset tofalseat global scope.- Optionally,
provider_profile_sourcesset to APF’s interceptor.
Refer to Add APF to OpenShell for the step-by-step procedure.
Outbound Calls to the OpenShell Gateway
With --openshell-gateway-url, the policy gateway calls the OpenShell gateway’s API to import provider profiles, list sandboxes, and send refresh UpdateConfig requests. In this release that connection is made without a client TLS configuration and without client credentials. Use it only where the OpenShell gateway accepts such calls, such as a loopback development gateway, and review it as an explicit egress from the APF host.
