NeMo Relay LangChain Integration
Use the nemo_relay.integrations.langchain package to add NeMo Relay
observability to LangChain agents.
Setup
Install the LangChain integration extra in your application environment.
uv
pip
The example below uses the NVIDIA LangChain provider. Install that provider extra too if you want to run the example as written:
uv
pip
Usage Example
Managed model calls expose available tools to NeMo Relay request intercepts.
Function tools have editable descriptions and input schemas. Provider-specific
definitions travel as opaque JSON values. After an edit, NemoRelayMiddleware
passes a copy of the original LangChain tool or provider-specific definition to
the model call, where the selected LangChain model adapter prepares it for its
provider. Tool count, order, and function-tool names must remain unchanged.
Relay uses Pydantic’s TypeAdapter for structured responses, as LangChain does.
It uses field names for encoding and decoding, so different input and output
aliases work together. The langchain extra includes Pydantic 2.11 or later.
It restores objects only when their types match a declared schema. Plain JSON
values pass through. Other Python objects cause a validation error. Encoding
and validation errors reach the caller.
When the agent uses ChatNVIDIA, NeMo Relay forwards request headers, including
Dynamo session lineage, as HTTP headers. They are not added to the NIM request
body. For chat models built on the OpenAI or Anthropic Python SDKs, such as
langchain-openai and langchain-anthropic, the headers travel in the
per-request extra_headers model setting, which those SDKs send as HTTP headers.
NeMo Relay also uses extra_headers when your model_settings already configure
it. Other providers, such as ChatOCIGenAI from langchain-oci, receive no Relay
headers because their SDKs reject unknown request fields. The model call proceeds
without them.
Middleware Ordering
LangChain calls the first middleware wrapper in the list first. This is the
outer wrapper. Requests pass through the wrappers in list order. Results pass
back through them in reverse order. These rules apply to wrap_tool_call,
wrap_model_call, and their async versions.
To record changes to tool results, place NemoRelayMiddleware() before the
middleware that makes those changes. Relay then records the result after the
other wrapper returns. Tool events and ATIF observations include the changes.
This example adds a status line to the weather tool’s result:
Relay records the result after AddStatusMiddleware adds the status line.
If you reverse the two entries, Relay records the result before that change.
The model still receives the status line in either case.
This example uses a ToolMessage with string content. If your tool returns a
Command or content blocks, keep that structure when you change the result.
Choose the order based on what you want to record. An outer Relay wrapper records one call around retries in inner middleware. It also records results that inner middleware returns from a cache or without calling the tool. An inner Relay wrapper records only calls that reach it.
For model calls, an outer Relay wrapper records the request before inner wrappers change it. It records the response after those wrappers return. Changes to graph state after the Relay wrapper returns are outside the recorded call.
NemoRelayCallbackHandler creates scopes for the agent run. It does not change
the middleware order. Use the middleware to route model and tool calls through
Relay.
For agents that run in LangGraph, use the same middleware order. Refer to Served LangChain Agents for callback setup. For Deep Agents, use the middleware position option.
Human Approval in Tools
NemoRelayMiddleware supports tools that pause for human approval with both
invoke and ainvoke. When a tool calls langgraph.types.interrupt(), Relay
closes its tool scope. The agent returns __interrupt__ with the approval
request.
Configure the agent with a checkpointer and set configurable.thread_id to
identify the conversation. To resume the tool, invoke the same agent with
Command(resume=...) and the same thread ID.
To record Graph Interrupt and Graph Resume marks, install the LangGraph
callbacks with nemo_relay.integrations.langgraph.configure_graph(agent) before
you run or serve the agent. Refer to the
LangGraph integration guide for callback
configuration.
Verify the Integration
The integration works correctly when:
- The agent run completes and prints a final response.
- The
langchain-requestscope contains the managed model call. - Tool activity appears under the same request when the agent decides to use
get_weather.
Observability
Relay chooses the LangChain result codec for managed tool calls. No extra
codec setup is needed. The codec writes display text or content parts to
content. It sets is_error from the returned ToolMessage.status.
Refer to
Normalized Tool Results
for the JSON format.
For a LangGraph Command, the codec uses the ToolMessage whose tool_call_id
matches the tool call. It keeps other messages and graph state in the returned
command. If no message matches, it records content: null.
ATIF uses supported text and image content for observations. If a tool returns
a ToolMessage with status="error", ATIF adds extra.is_error: true. Relay
also sets the tool span status to ERROR. It still returns the message to
LangChain, so the framework can handle the failure as usual. Deep Agents uses
the same middleware and codec.
Refer to Observability for details on exporting NeMo Relay observability data to third-party systems.
