Sandboxed Deployments
Deploy a registered Fabric agent with --mode openshell to run it in an OpenShell
sandbox under the executor’s network and filesystem policy. This mode is independent
of the gateway’s Docker or Kubernetes compute driver. Requests still go through the
platform’s Agents gateway.
Prerequisites
- A CLI context connected to your platform.
- An OpenShell deployment executor configured as described in the OpenShell operator guide.
- A running OpenShell gateway. The platform API image includes the OpenShell client;
a source checkout also needs the
openshellextra ofnemo-deployments-plugin. - A Fabric
agent.yamlwith a model available through the platform’s Inference Gateway. See Register Agents. - An agent image packaged with
nemo agents package --sandbox-runtime openshell, compatible with your platform version and compute-node architecture, and already accessible to the gateway’s compute nodes. See Build and Publish Agent Images.
Configure the Executor
Add an openshell executor to the platform configuration and select it for agent
deployments. Keep your existing executors: the list replaces the defaults.
The agent reaches the Inference Gateway through platform_egress, so the platform
must listen on an address the sandbox can reach, for example with
nemo services run --host 0.0.0.0. For a TLS gateway, use an https endpoint and set
tls.ca_cert_path, tls.client_cert_path, and tls.client_key_path.
The generated policy allows platform_egress and denies other network destinations.
If tools need external services, provide your own policy with default_policy_path;
the platform egress rule is always kept. Filesystem confinement uses Landlock with
landlock_compatibility: best_effort, which does not confine on unsupported kernels.
Set hard_requirement to fail the deployment instead.
The examples below register and deploy an agent in WORKSPACE. AGENT_CONFIG
is the path to your existing local agent.yaml file, and IMAGE_TAG is the
reference to the prepared image:
Register and Deploy
The deployment reaches running when the agent service is ready.
--use-image-entrypoint is not supported: the sandbox supervisor ignores the image
entrypoint.
Invoke and Verify Policy
The invocation returns the agent’s response through the platform’s Agents gateway. A deployment can be ready while invocation fails because of model access or platform-to-gateway routing. Check the agent’s output on its Logs tab in NeMo Studio, and check sandbox-to-platform access separately. For platform-to-gateway routing, see the operator guide’s troubleshooting section.
Network Policy
OpenShell associates each sandbox with deployment-name and deployment-workspace labels. With the OpenShell CLI connected to the deployment’s gateway and gateway workspace, those labels identify the sandbox:
In the following examples, SANDBOX_NAME is the name from that listing and
PLATFORM_API_URL is the endpoint configured by platform_egress:
With the default policy, the health request succeeds and the external request is denied. The gateway’s audit logs record policy denials; connection failures alone can also result from DNS or network problems. Custom policies may allow additional destinations, including the external host in this example.
Clean Up
Undeploying removes the deployment and its sandbox. Deleting the agent removes the registration. The agent image is retained.
