Upgrading from NeMo Evaluator
The Evaluator plugin is now NeMo Helix Evals. Update existing deployments before starting the new version. The repository rename tool updates source files; it does not migrate deployment configuration, databases, or serialized job artifacts.
Before upgrading
- Drain evaluation jobs. Finish queued and running row, agent, and retrieval
evaluations before upgrading. Existing compiled job specifications and cloudpickle
metric bundles can reference removed
nemo_evaluatorornemo_evaluator_sdkmodules. Reading job history does not make those artifacts executable. Rebuild compiled specifications and recreate or re-upload metric bundles from source. - Rename configuration overrides. Move every
evaluator:block toevals:, preserving all values, includingsandboxed_gym_defaultand image overrides. For Helm, checkplatformConfig.evaluator, custombaseHelixConfigYAML, and any additional configuration files or environment overrides. ReplaceNEMO_EVALUATOR_*withNEMO_EVALS_*andNHX_EVALUATOR_*withNHX_EVALS_*where those settings are used. Update service allowlists fromevaluatortoevals, even when it appears in the middle of a list.
The old configuration namespace is not an alias. Leaving
evaluator: {sandboxed_gym_default: true} unchanged loses that override, allowing
the new service to use its default execution mode. Explicitly retain the sandbox
setting under evals: and verify it before accepting untrusted evaluation jobs.
Update all feature flags
Feature-flag overrides must be renamed, keeping their existing values. Old names are no longer read. An old override disabling evaluations can therefore fall back to the new default, which enables evaluations. Update deployed platform and Helm configuration, environment files, and any custom Studio build or runtime markers. Restart Studio or rebuild custom assets as appropriate, then verify the intended evaluation routes are enabled or disabled.
For example, these platform configuration overrides keep sandboxing enabled and the evaluation UI disabled:
For Helm, put these structured settings under platformConfig in your values file.
Update integrations
Update external gateway routes, SIEM and audit rules, service-identity matching, job-source filters, scripts, and integrations that match the previous values.
Permissions and stored entity kinds are unchanged. Keep evaluator.* roles and
scopes, task-kind discriminators, and entity types. Python classes and types such
as Evaluator, EvaluatorPluginService, and EvaluatorPerms also retain their
names for this change.
Existing job history
Completed jobs remain stored in the core Jobs service. This rename does not migrate their source fields. Studio evaluation job lists and Evals job list routes filter by the new sources, so older jobs do not appear there. Access historical records through the core Jobs service; retrieval through a typed plugin resource also depends on the stored specification matching its schema.
This is a visibility limitation, separate from the requirement to drain jobs and rebuild artifacts. After upgrading, submit a small new evaluation and verify its new source, results, configuration, and intended Studio feature gates.
