NeMo Studio Guardrail Configs
The Guardrails Studio UI is a preview feature and is disabled by default. An administrator must set studio.feature_flags.guardrails_enabled: true in the platform configuration and restart Studio before Governance > Guardrails appears. The same feature flag controls the Models > Virtual Models page.
Use Governance > Guardrails in the NeMo Studio workspace sidebar to create, edit, test, and manage NeMo Guardrails configurations for the selected workspace.
Guardrail Config List
The Guardrail Configs table shows all guardrail configurations in the current workspace. Select a row to open the config detail page.
The table shows each config’s name, main model, flows (Input and Output badges for the rail stages the config uses), and last updated time. The Created column is hidden by default and can be enabled from the column controls.
Create a Guardrail Config
Select Create Guardrail, enter a Name for the config, and select Create. Studio creates the config and opens its detail page. When a workspace model is available, Studio sets it as the config’s main model so you can run tests right away; otherwise, set the main model on the Configuration tab.
Duplicate opens the same dialog, titled Duplicate Guardrail, with a copy name prefilled. The new config copies the source config’s description and full configuration.
You can also create and update configurations through the nemo guardrail configs CLI or the Guardrails API. NeMo Studio reflects the current workspace state.
Guardrail Config Detail
The detail page header shows the config name and an actions menu (⋯) with Duplicate and Delete. The page has three tabs: Configuration, Test and Validate, and Virtual Models.
Configuration
The Guardrail Configuration panel is where you edit the config.
Turning a rail on writes every setting it needs (flows and prompts) into the config. When you turn a rail off and its settings remain, a discard button removes them.
The Configuration JSON panel below shows the full configuration as it will be saved, including any settings the panel does not surface. It is read-only and updates as you edit.
When the config has unsaved changes, the header shows Reset and Save Guardrail. Save Guardrail saves your changes to the platform; Reset discards them and restores the saved config. Unsaved edits are kept in your browser if you leave the page, until you save or reset them or the stored config changes.
Test and Validate
The Test and Validate tab holds the config’s test cases under Guardrail Test Cases.
- Tests lists each test as a conversation of messages. Add, reorder, duplicate, or remove messages, switch a test between Chat and JSON views, and use Add Another Test to create another test. Edits save automatically.
- Test Results summarizes the latest results and shows a table of each test’s input, output, and result. Select a row to view the result details.
The run button, labeled with the test count (for example, Run 3 Tests), runs every test against the config. When the config has unsaved changes, choose Draft to test your unsaved edits or Saved to test the stored config. Running tests requires a main model.
Virtual Models
The Virtual Models tab lists the inference routes that apply this guardrail config to requests or responses. It uses the same table and row actions as the Virtual Models page.
Delete a Guardrail Config
Select Delete from the row actions menu on the list page, or open the actions menu (⋯) in the detail page header and select Delete. Confirm the prompt to remove the configuration. Deletion is permanent.
A config that a virtual model still applies cannot be deleted. When you delete a single config, the error message names the virtual models that use it; detach the config from those virtual models, then delete it.
