NeMo Studio Model Evaluations

View as Markdown

Use Models > Evaluations in the NeMo Studio workspace sidebar to run evaluations against models in the workspace and review their results. The page is titled Model Evaluations.

Model Evaluations is enabled by default. An administrator can disable it by setting studio.feature_flags.evals_enabled: false in the platform configuration and restarting Studio. This removes the sidebar entry and the Model Evaluations pages. It does not remove an agent’s Evaluations tab or Run Evaluation button, and a Custom Model’s Evaluate this Model button stays visible even though the page it opens is no longer available.

The Run Evaluation button is controlled separately by studio.feature_flags.model_evaluation_form_enabled, which is also enabled by default.

Select Run Evaluation in the page header to start a model evaluation. A Custom Model’s Evaluate this Model button opens this page. You can also run evaluations with the nemo evals CLI or the API. To evaluate an agent, use the agent’s Evaluations tab instead.

Run a Model Evaluation

Run Evaluation opens the Run Model Evaluation wizard. Select Next to validate the current step and continue, or Back to discard the current step’s entries and return to the previous one.

  1. Begin: Choose Create a new evaluation configuration or Re-run an existing evaluation. Re-running reuses a saved configuration and skips directly to Run Evaluation, where you choose the saved Evaluation Configuration and the model, so only the model changes between runs. The re-run option is disabled until the workspace has a saved configuration.
  2. Configuration: Enter a Configuration Name and upload or select an Input File. This wizard accepts .json, .jsonl, and .csv files and shows a File Validation summary for the selected file. Under Field Mapping, choose which field holds the Input sent to the model and which holds the Reference answer. A file in OpenAI messages format is mapped automatically: the last user message is the input and the last assistant message is the reference.
  3. Metrics: Select at least one metric: LLM-as-a-Judge, Exact Match, F1, BLEU, ROUGE, String Check, or Number Check. Metrics that compare against a reference are unavailable when no Reference field is mapped. LLM-as-a-Judge requires a Judge Model and at least one score under Score Definitions; each score needs a Name and Scoring Criteria, and the Add Score dialog reports Scoring criteria is required when the criteria are empty. LLM-as-a-Judge is selected by default with a correctness score.
  4. Run Evaluation: Select the Model to Evaluate. In the optional Live Test panel, select Test to generate a response for one dataset row and score it with each selected metric. The panel shows the model response and a score for each metric, or the error from any metric that failed. Live tests don’t create a job or store results. Select Submit to create the evaluation job.

New configurations are saved so that later runs can reuse them. After you submit, Studio opens the new job’s detail page.

Evaluation Results List

The list shows each evaluation job’s name, status, and creation time. Search by name or filter by status. Select a row to open the job’s detail page.

Evaluation Result Detail

The detail page shows the job’s details, a Scores panel with aggregate metrics, per-row results for the evaluated dataset, and a collapsible Logs panel. Scores and row results are computed once the job reaches a terminal state; if the job failed, results aren’t available.
