Ampere Architecture vGPU Types#

The NVIDIA Ampere architecture represents a major leap in GPU performance for AI training, inference, and data center workloads. As one of the most widely deployed enterprise GPU architectures, Ampere delivers exceptional performance with second-generation RT Cores, third-generation Tensor Cores, and Multi-Instance GPU (MIG) technology for secure hardware-level GPU partitioning.

Ampere GPUs power a broad range of AI and compute workloads including deep learning training, inference at scale, high-performance computing, and data analytics. With support for both MIG-backed and time-sliced vGPU configurations, Ampere provides MIG-backed and time-sliced virtualization options for maximizing GPU utilization and supporting diverse workload requirements in enterprise data centers.

Ampere GPU Architecture#

Physical GPUs per board: 1 (with the exception of NVIDIA A16)

The maximum number of vGPUs per board is the product of the maximum number of vGPUs per GPU and the number of physical GPUs per board.

Required license edition: NVIDIA AI Enterprise

Intended use cases:

  • vGPUs with more than 40 GB of framebuffer: Training Workloads

  • vGPUs with 40 GB of framebuffer: Inference Workloads

These vGPU types support a single display with a fixed maximum resolution.
