GSP firmware cannot be disabled when NVIDIA Linux open GPU kernel modules are installed#

Description#

On a Linux VM or bare-metal host in a GPU pass-through deployment, GSP firmware remains enabled after the NVIDIA module parameter NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware is set to 0 and the system is rebooted. The nvidia-smi -q command continues to report a GSP firmware version instead of N/A.

This issue occurs when the NVIDIA vGPU software graphics driver for Linux is installed with the NVIDIA Linux open GPU kernel modules.

Workaround#

  1. Reinstall the NVIDIA vGPU software graphics driver for Linux by running the driver installer with the -m=kernel option to use the proprietary flavor of kernel modules.

  2. Add the following entry to the /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf file:

    options nvidia NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0

  3. Reboot the VM or bare-metal host.

  4. Run nvidia-smi -q and confirm that the GSP firmware version is N/A.
